Car kills Petauke pedestrian

A 46-YEAR old man, identified as Barose Phiri of Kayaba village, in Senior Chief Kalindawalo’s area, Petauke District, died on a spot after being hit by a motor vehicle on Great East Road on Saturday, police have confirmed.
Police deputy spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said the accident happened on Saturday around 18:30 hours at Kafyula area, 12 km East of Petauke Town.
Mr. Moonga explained in a statement that the accident occurred when the driver was overtaking another motor vehicle and lost control and hit into the pedestrians who were walking on the right side.
“A Mr. Barose Phiri died on the spot and his body is lying in Petauke Hospital mortuary, while another victim, Clarke Banda who lost her left hand, right at the scene is admitted to the same hospital,” he said.
He said the accident involved a Toyota sprinter registration number ALE 7659, driven by unknown person, driving from the eastern direction and ran away after the accident,” Mr Hamoonga said.
He said that Mwaziona Zulu ,21, of Kawalala village Chief Kawaza in Sinda district and Frederick Phiri, 35, of Ndeleya Village Chief Nyanje in Sinda District were also involved in an accident and sustained minor cuts and were attended to at Petauke District Hospital and discharged.
Mr Hamoonga appealed to the residents of Petauke and the public at large that may have information of the wanted motor vehicle and the driver to report to the nearest police station.
