ZRA strategises to grow tax compliance

Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) Commissioner General Kingsley Chanda says the organization’s strategic plan for 2019-2021 seeks to grow Zambia’s tax base through building a culture of compliance.

Speaking in Lusaka yesterday when his organization donated 10 computers, worthy K100, 000, to Serenje Boys Technical School, Mr. Chanda said that ZRA wished to take advantage of technology to increase service delivery and promote compliance by simplifying business processes.

The commissioners general said that, in order to build a compliance culture, the revenue authority is also working towards incorporating tax education in the local schools curriculum so that pupils could learn about tax from a tender age. 

“As ZRA this donation forms what we call Corporation Social Investment (CSI) because this is not just a donation but an investment that will bring immense benefits in terms of improving the quality of education to the pupils and also show the public that as a revenue authority we care about their needs and the needs of their children,” Chanda stated.

“We are also currently running tax chat programs with various schools, both primary and secondary, where we discuss various tax matters to our future taxpayers,” he said.

Mr Chanda was hopeful that the donation would help pupils and teachers improve their access to information.

He assured that ZRA’s Corporate Social Investment would be widespread to ensure that they benefit people in all corners of the country.

And receiving the donation, Serenje Boys Technical School head teacher Borries Chisulo said expressed happiness about the computers saying they will help make teaching of ICT easier.

“With this 10 computers, the number of pupils per computer has obviously reduced. It is evident that we still need some more,” Mr. Chisulo said

He appealed to other institutions to emulate the gesture by ZRA.

Mr. Chisulo said his school only have 20 computers for over 700 pupils, a situation which makes the teaching of ICT a challenge.
