The Kabwe Magistrates court has sentenced a 24-year-old man to one year imprisonment for stabbing his friend with a knife over a girlfriend.

Principal resident magistrate Daniel Musonda jailed Emmanuel Chalwe for unlawfully wounding Stephen Chilawo over a girlfriend.

The court heard that the victim was on January 11, 2019 around 03:00hours, awaken from sleep by the sound of a woman crying and that he saw a woman running towards his house when he peeped through the window.

The court also heard that a confrontation ensued when he went outside to try and protect the woman who was running away from a boyfriend threatening to trying to beat her for being unfaithful.

Chalwe stroke Chilawo with a knife and ran away after accusing him of going out with his girlfriend.

Chilawo, accompanied with his wife, reported the matter to the police the same night.

In mitigation, Chalwe told the court he regretted his action and begged for lenience saying that he was the breadwinner for his two children and also had aged parents to look after.

But in passing judgement, Magistrate Musonda told Chalwe he was sentencing him to 12 months imprisonment because he was a first offender and had also taken into consideration his mitigation.
