LCC cites seven for noise pollution

THE Lusaka City Council (LCC) has summoned seven people to appear before the Fast Track Court for playing loud music (noise pollution) in the central business district.

And the local authority has warned that it will soon start penalising residents who do not have Occupational Health permits for their buildings.

Council Public Relations Officer, Brenda Katongola made this announcement in a press statement released to The Sun in Lusaka yesterday.

She said that the seven have been cited for noise pollution and noise nuisance contrary to Statutory Instrument number 12 of 2018 of the Local Government Act.

The seven will appear in court soon.

And Ms Katogola said it had come to the attention of the council that a lot of buildings and residential premises in the central business district do not have occupational health permits resulting in haphazard placement of septic tanks which could lead to contamination of underground water and other risks.

“The procedure is that people are supposed to apply for Occupational Health permits before occupying their building premises so that officers from the council can assess and certify the place fit for habitation,” she said.

She said that the council has also beefed up the number of its police officers to help control illegal activities and public nuisances in the city.

Ms Katongola cited street vending, vending from grave yards, noise pollution, vandalism of public infrastructure, illegal pasting of posters and issuing of fliers as being among the problematic malpractices that the council would like to deal with.

She further warned that the council shall not hesitate to take legal action against individuals who will be found wanting.

“The council is appealing to citizens in Lusaka to be vigilant and look out for such people who are retarding the development of the city,” said Ms Katongola.
