Government’s stance on ECL’s terminal benefits received with mixed feelings

Stakeholders have received with mixed reactions governments’ stance on the terminal benefits of former president Edgar Lungu.

Justice Minister Mulambo Haimbe recently said the former president should not be enjoying his benefits as a former head of state since he declared that he’s still in active politics.

Mr. Haimbe indicated that the Attorney General’s chambers have taken a view on the matter to which and has since been informed.

The stance by government has come as a result of statements made by the former head of state when Patriotic Front Members of Parliament visited his house last week that although he is not in political leadership he is still politically active.

But some stakeholders have argued with government stance saying the former head of state should be left alone.

Council of churches in Zambia –CCZ General Secretary Emmanuel Chikoya says government should desist from taking actions that are seen as working against the former President.

Father Chikoya says the government should desist from engaging in vindictive actions that are meant to simply humiliate the former President.

And Democratic Party President Harry Kalaba says the government has now started playing politics with former President Lungu’s benefits because his statement does not warrant termination of his benefits.

Mr Kalaba says government should be very careful with decisions surrounding the former head of state.
