A VIOLENT husband who was dragged to court for divorce has been ordered to compensate his wife with K7, 000 by the Matero Local Court.

Ruth Phiri of Kabanana sued her husband Yobe Phiri of the same compound for divorce for allegedly being violent.

The two were appearing before magistrate Pauline Newa sitting with Harriet Mulenga.

The two got married in 2012 and have two children.

Ruth told the court that Phiri was a violent man and that they had been on separation hoping he would change but all had been in vain.

“We used to live well but then he started being violent, he would insult and fight me. I went to my parents’ house for a month then I went back to him but he did not change.

“I saved money for a plot and we sold it to his sister’s husband but I do not know where the money went. I bought another plot and asked him to add some money for us to build but he refused that is how I built the house on my own,” she said

She said after she bought a car she gave him to use because of love she had for him.

“I was shocked when one day he and his friends came to pack my things to chase me out of the house. His friend has the audacity to pack my underwear. I am tired of this marriage,” said Ruth”.

In defence Phiri told the court that he supported his wife with K130 daily but their problems only started when he started business.

“Ruth does not listen to me whenever I tell her something, the children can remain with the household goods,” said Yobe”.

The court observed that their marriage could not work because there was no respect for the wife and proceeded to grant the couple divorce.

“You will compensate her with K7, 000 and maintain the children with K300 monthly but they will remain in their mothers’ custody.

“You already used the money for one plot so she will remain with the house and all house hold goods will be for the children,” said magistrate Newa.
