THE Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA) has projected that Monze and Mazabuka districts in Southern Province are likely to experience severe floods that might affect the residents in the two districts.
WARMA Public Relations officer, Mubiana Nalwendo said the flood monitoring system shows the possibility of severe floods on the Magoye and Kasaka river systems.
Mr Nalwendo added that floods would mostly affect residents living near the river systems and were expected to start from January 29 to February 14, 2023, and would affect people living in areas of Siamusonde and Mwanampongo villages and surrounding areas.
He added that the system shows that the flood will be severe and people living in Settlements around areas such as Mwanampongo village and surrounding settlements are likely to be affected by these floods as well.
Mr Nalwendo further said Kasaka stream in Monze is likely to experience severe flooding reaching the peak on January 29, 2023 and currently, the stream is experiencing a medium flood which will graduate into a severe flood and affect Siamusonde village and surrounding settlements.
He further said Magoye River in Mazabuka District also shows a trigger of severe flood which is likely to reach the peak and it will gradually intensify in severity up to January 30, 2023. Mr Nalwendo said WARMA is mandated by the Water Resources Management Act No. 21 of 2011, to conduct drought and flood forecasts.
This is according to a statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka today, by WARMA Public Relations Officer, Mubiana Nalwendo.
