Two civil servants of Chirundu and Lusaka have been jailed for theft of government medicines valued at K35, 803.

Caeser Kagoli, 35, a pharmacy technologist of Chirundu  and his accomplice Joseph Kasongo aged 29 years of Lusaka, have been sentenced to two and one year imprisonment respectively.

This is in a matter where the Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) in September 2021 while working in conjunction with the Zambia Police Service apprehended Kagoli and Mr Kasongo and charged them with theft by public servant contrary to the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

ZAMRA public relations officer, Ludovic Mwape said in a statement that Kagoli has been convicted and sentenced to two years imprisonment with hard labour suspended for 12 months while Kasongo has been jailed for 12 months with hard labour suspended for six months.

Mr. Mwape said when the matter was brought before magistrate Austern Mubita, at the Siavonga Magistrate Court on  October 19, 2021 Kagoli and Kasongo pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He said the duo were then put on trial and in the process found guilty of the offence leading to their conviction and sentencing on May 31, 2022.
