A Traditional leader in Monze district, Southern Provide has raised concerns over the escalating levels of early marriages in his chiefdom.

Chief Choongo has attributed the rise in teen pregnancies and early marriages to among many other things, poverty.

He said most families especially in rural areas, are not able to pay for their children’s education and opt to marry them off, forgetting that it is wrong to marry off a child.

The traditional leader charged that some parents are blind to ills that come with teen pregnancies and child marriages, hence the need for concerted efforts in sensitising the rural populace.

He has called on the media and organisations like FAWEZA, World Vision and others to continue sensitizing people so that children are educated.

The traditional leader added that there are organisations that sponsor girl children and parents should take advantage of such opportunities instead of marrying off their children.
