FMD BREAKS IN KABOMPO

FOOT AND MOUTH disease ( FMD ) has claimed a number of domestic animals in Mumbezhi area of Kabompo district, Northwestern province.

Acting district veterinary coordinator, Cornelius Mweemba says his office has been receiving between four and five weekly reports of deaths of the domestic animals.

“I can confirm that we have an outbreak of the foot and mouth disease that has affected cattle in Mumbezhi area of Kabompo”, he said.

Mr. Mweemba said in an interview that samples of the strain have already been collected and sent to the province adding that tentative budget on combating the disease has been drawn only awaiting funds.

Farmers in the area are being discouraged to conduct movement of animals as well as communal grazing as it is allowing the further spread of the disease.

Mr. Mweemba also advised famers to treat the infected animals with available antibiotics or salt as well as burn carcasses of the infected dead animals.

“Farmers are being encouraged to treat the infected animals as well as avoiding movement of the animals and communal grazing”, he said.

Meanwhile, Kabompo district stakeholders association chairperson, Rodgers Chinyemba has appealed to government to expedite the re-cruitment of extension officers as the current numbers have negatively affected agriculture in the district.

“Let government quickly send the district more agriculture extension officers as the staffing levels have affected us negatively”, Mr Chiny-emba said.

He said that the low staffing levels hinders quick information flow which affects prompt decision making by the affected stakeholders.
