ECZ sounds warning to stakeholders causing unnecessary disruptions and harassment of poll staff

The Electoral Commission of Zambia ECZ says it is working tirelessly to ensure it delivers the results of Thursday’s poll on time and will therefore not entertain any unnecessary disruptions from stakeholders.

ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Patrick Nshindano says the continued harassment of poll staff tallying the votes at polling stations is of serious concern and warns stakeholders not to force the commission to act.

Mr Nshindano says the more stakeholders harass the poll staff, the longer the process of announcing results will take, calling on them to allow the commission do its work professionally.

Mr Nshindano has since instructed the police to arrest those who will be found harassing poll staff at any of the polling stations.

And MrNshindano says only the commission is mandated to announce the official and verified results of the polls and therefore, any PVT by stakeholders is only for them to enjoy.

Mr Nshindano says there is no other stakeholder constitutionally mandated to declare any results besides the electoral commission.

Meanwhile, Common Grounds Zambia representative KaimboKatengo has observed that some stakeholders are trying to instigate alarm among the general public by trying to discredit the commission spearheading the elections which is robbing the public of confidence.

MrKatengo has urged stakeholders to be very careful with the words uttered against the commission because one wrong statement from any stakeholder would be inflammatory and unpatriotic to Zambia.

And Patriot Front PF Secretary General has raised concern on the delay by the commission to act on complaints made by the party of the harassment and chasing of polling agents in Southern Province.

MrMwila also raised concern over the death of PF North-Western Province Chairperson Jackson Kungo who was killed at a polling station in Solwezi yet the commission has not given a clear position on the matter.
