Fourth Republican President Rupiah Banda has reminded contestants in Thursday’s polls that every election has winners and losers and all candidates must therefore respect the will of the people.

Mr Banda says the country has chosen for itself a system that gives legitimacy to those in government through the ballot box and any attempt to impose a leadership outside the concept of one man, one vote will be an assault on the sacrifices of the founding fathers.

Mr Banda says this will also imperil the sovereignty and independence of the country and jeopardize the peace and unity of this generation and those to come.

He says since the introduction of multi-party politics in 1990, several peaceful and democratic elections have been held and he country can be proud in the manner it resolved electoral disputes using the judiciary.

Mr Banda also says Zambians have great confidence in the governance institutions created and therefore, the Electoral Commission of Zambia should be given space and support to fulfil its mandate in a satisfactory manner.
