Opposition United party for National Development (UPND) president Hakainde Hichilema has urged the defence force to apply the law fairly following their deployment to curb political violence.
In a decisive move to preserve Zambia’s cherished peace especially ahead of next week’s general election, President Edgar Lungu yesterday ordered the deployment of defence forces to help curb escalated political violence.
Mr Hichilema says the Police and other relevant authorities in the electoral process should not take sides in the execution of the duties but instead strive to protect the constitution.
He adds that the men in uniform should not allow themselves to carry orders that are in breach of the constitution as it would degrade the democracy the country has enjoyed over the years.
Meanwhile the National Democratic Congress Party general secretary Charles Kabwita has backed President Lungu’s decision to deploy the army in curbing violence following the escalating cases of violence in the country.
