Political scientist Bizeck Phiri has called for serious introspection on the need to amend policies around electoral process following the cancellation of elections in areas where candidates have either died or withdrawn from the race in the August 12 general elections.
According to article 52(6) of the republican constitution when a candidate resigns, dies or gets disqualified in accordance with Articles 70, 100 or 153 of the Constitution the law requires the cancellation of elections and this calls for fresh nominations for eligible candidates.
Professor Phiri says there is need to introduce a law that will ensure that nominated candidates who resign with impunity are barred from participating in any political activities.
Professor Phiri says the continued resignation of nominated candidates has become costly and a draw back for most political parties.
