ECZ cracks the whip, suspends PF, UPND campaigns in four districts

The Electoral Commission of Zambia ECZ has suspended with immediate effect all manner of campaigns by the Patriotic Front and United Party for National Development in Lusaka, Mpulungu, Namwala and Nakonde districts due to escalating political violence involving the two parties.
And the commission has suspended all political party roadshows across the country following findings that political parties have converted the road shows into mobile rallies which is not only in breach of Covid-19 protocols but the Electoral Code of Conduct.
ECZ Chief Electoral Officer Patrick Nshindano says the decision will only be reviewed after 14 days, and therefore, the two parties will not be allowed to conduct any form of campaigns in the four districts except running of already paid for adverts in the media.
Mr Nshindano has directed the media not to cover any political party activities by the two parties in the four districts and the Zambia Police should not allow any political activity by the said parties.
He says the commission has a moral obligation to safeguard the lives of the people given the conduct of political parties and their lack of adherence to Covid-19 guidelines at a time the country continues to record an increase in the number of infections.
Mr Nshindano notes with dismay that the road shows are being used to instigate violence, the pulling down of campaign materials and instilling fear in the general public when campaigns are meant to give hope to the public.
Meanwhile, Mr Nshindano has announced that the commission has restricted to a maximum of three members of any political party or independent candidates per household to conduct door to door campaigns and one vehicle for the public address campaigns.
He has also warned parties and independent candidates that it is unlawful to place campaign posters on private property and residential property without consent and that the owners are at liberty to remove such materials.
