Truck crashes cyclist

A THIRTY THREE year old man of Kamangu Village in Shiwang`andu District of Muchinga Province has died in a Road Traffic Accident after a Mercedes Benz Axio Truck flipped and trapped him.

Muchinga Province Deputy Police Commissioner, Geoffrey Kunda confirmed the incident in an interview with the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Shiwang`andu District yesterday.

Mr Kunda said the accident happened yesterday August 13, around 14:30hrs at Matumbo area along the Great North Road.

Mr Kunda said involved in the accident was a Tanzanian National Adam Twalibu 39 who was driving  a Mercedes Benz Axio truck, with Horse registration  number T738AYV and trailer registration number T720 CTC a property of Shilwa  Transport Limited in Dar-Es-salaam, Tanzania with 2 passengers on board.

The Deputy Police Commissioner further said the accident also involved was a cyclist Robert Mwaba aged 33 of Kamangu village in Chief Chibesakunda`s Area in Shiwang’andu district who was cycling a gents bicycle on the right side of the road from south heading northern direction with a passenger  on board.

He named the passenger as Angela Mulenga 38 of Samfwa village also in Chief Chibesakunda`s Area.

Mr Kunda stated that it is alleged that the accident happened when the said driver lost control of the vehicle due to negligence and the vehicle careered off the road to the right side when he was driving from the North heading to the Southern direction.

”the vehicle flipped and trapped the said cyclist who was cycling from the opposite direction and due to the impact, the cyclist sustained severe head injuries, bruised face and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Chinsali General hospital, ” he added.

The Body of the deceased has been deposited in Chinsali General Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.

And Mr Kunda further said the truck involved incurred a depressed left door and broken left side view mirror adding that the said truck is still at the scene of accident while the bicycle is extensively damaged.

The Deputy Police Commissioner said the Truck Driver and his 2 passengers as well as the cycle passenger escaped unhurt.
