A 40-YEAR-OLD woman of Kabushi Township in Ndola has lost a 19-year-old marriage after her husband divorced her because of her excessive beer-drinking habits.
In this case, Abel Mwape, 42, asked the court to dissolve his marriage, saying he was fed up of the wife’s drinking habits.
Mwape married Langa Verra in 2001and together they have four children.
He told the Kabushi Local Court that problems started when his wife started drinking heavily and stopped respecting him.
“We have had countless family meetings but still, my wife does not change. She lies that she has gone to buy food at the market and comes back drunk, I am tired of her behaviour,” Mwape said.
He said that his wife even fails to take care of him whenever his sick and fails to run their home due to her behaviour.
But in defence, Langa said she started drinking because Mwape used to sleep out and had a lot of women.
“When we had our first child he used to spend nights at another woman’s house all the time. He is demanding a divorce because he has been so stressed as he has no employment and his business is not doing well. He never gives me money, alcohol is what comforts my problems,” Langa said.
In passing judgment, presiding magistrate Mildred Namwizye sitting with Evelyn Nalwizya granted divorce and ordered Mwape to compensate Langa K15,000.
“First instalment will be K1000 then K500 every month, Mwape will provide for all the children’s basic needs and make sure they do not lack,” Ms Namwizye said.
