THE influx Chirundu traders opting to do business on streets after abandoning their market is cause of great concern, says district council secretary John Mwanza.
Mr Mwanza expressed his displeasure over the development which he said also posed health challenges because the streets had no toilets and safe water.
“It is the sole responsibility of the council to ensure that people doing business trade from clean, safe and designated trading areas,” Mr Mwanza said.
Mr Mwanza regretted that council general cleaners had repeatedly bitterly complained of handling human feacal matter in plastic bags and opaque beer packs which they indiscriminately dumped anyhow.
He said that contributed to difficulties in collecting garbage, resulting in the town looking very dirty.
“This paralyses council’s efforts to Keep Chirundu clean and healthy,” he said
He however said that the council would not relent in getting rid of street vendors because the authority had spent a lot of money to rehabilitate markets and build VIP toilets at the local Mazongololo market.
Mr Mwanza warned traders who failed to return to the market and continued to obstruct the council from executing its duties risked to be arrested.
He emphasized that the local authority was only implementing what the local government Act stipulated and was working within the confinement of the law and expected people not to politicize the actions taken.
