YOUTH JAILED 5 YEARS FOR QUAD MOTOR BIKE THEFT

A YOUTH of Choma will spend the next 60 Months doing hard labour in prison for stealing a motor quad bike.

This was in a matter in which Sidney Malonga, 27 of Choma’s Zambia Compound pleaded guilty to stealing a motor bike.

Particulars of the offence are that Malonga on September 3 while acting with other unknown people stole an unregistered quad bike valued at K5, 000, the property of William Siboya.

When the matter came up for facts before Choma Resident Magistrate Seliya Kanunka, senior public prosecutor Charles Chinzai said that on the material day Mr Siboya parked his bike outside where he always left it around 23:00 hors and went to sleep.

The following morning he discovered that his bike was missing and reported the matter to the Police.

A few days later police received a report that a motorbike had been seen similar to the stolen one and when they made a follow up it was identified as the ne which belonged to Mr Siboya but Malonga claimed it was abandoned at his farm after it ran out of fuel.

Malonga was later apprehended after he put up an advert to sell the bike not knowing that the Police had it in their custody.

Despite pleading guilty and asking for lenience, Magistrate Kanunka said she would be failing in her duties if she let him go unpunished as she would be sending a wrong signal to would be offenders.

She then slapped him with 5 years imprisonment with hard labour effective from date of  his arrest.
