TWO children aged two and six years of Lusaka’s Garden House area were burnt to death when a house they were sleeping in caught fire on Saturday night.

Police spokesperson Esther Katongo confirmed the incident to the Sun and named the children as Mike and Abigail that happened around 20:00 hours.

In a statement Ms Katongo said the fire was caused by a lit candle which was left by the maid who went to take food to the parents of the victims at the shop.

“A report was received of fire that occurred on September 28, around 20:00 hours at unmarked residence on Mumbwa Road behind Zambeef in Garden House area belonging to a Rwandan national Vincent Nizwe in which two children died in the inferno namely male juvenile Mike aged 6 and female Abigail aged 2 years,”Ms Katongo said.

She said fire fighters were called to the scene but unfortunately they found the minors already engulfed by the inferno.

“The fire was put off by 21:00 hours by the fire brigade team from the Lusaka City Council and most house hold goods whose value has not yet been ascertained were burnt down,” she said.

She said the bodies of the two children were taken to UTH mortuary to wait for postmortem and burial.

Ms Katongo said Police have however opened an inquiry in the matter.
