RESIDENTS of Lusaka West in Malone area have expressed concern over speeding trucks that carry quarry dust which have been killing children almost on daily basis.

A concerned parent Mr Evans Mwansa said on Thursday a nine year old boy was crushed to death by a speeding truck in the same area.

In an interview with the Sun, Mr Mwansa said trucks carrying quarry dust from Zamastone and Alberstone had become a spucre of concern as they had continue to take away lives of children in the area.

In the latest incident Mr Mwansa said two boys were about to cross the road when the truck hit one of the boys, killing him on the spot.

“On Thursday one boy was crushed to death when two of them wanted to cross the road. The other boy managed to cross the road. Apparently the truck was over speeding and failed to apply brakes,” he said.

He however said that immediately after the incident, the local authority started putting up temporal humps on the road to slow down the trucks.

“This is the second time someone is being killed on this same road; just two months ago a man was also crushed in a similar manner,” he said

He cautioned parents and other residents to help their children cross the road when going to school.

Mr Mwansa has since appealed to RTSA to monitor some roads in Lusaka West being used by trucks because of quarry mining activities, adding that most of them were always over speeding and overloaded.

He further called on the company owning quarry mines to help upgrade the road to bituminous standard as a corporate social responsibility to lessen accident as the road became slippery after applying water on it.

Mr Mwansa implored the Zambia police traffic division to be monitoring other roads such as Mungwi and Kasupe where speeding trucks were also on the loose.

Police spokesperson Esther Katongo could not be immediately reached for a comment
