SUSPECTED WIZARD ESCAPES DEATH: he was left for dead after two assailants hacked him in the head with an axe for allegedly practicing witchcraft

A 66-year-old suspected wizard of Mukomang’ombe village of Chief Muyombe in Mafinga District was on September 21 hacked to near death by unknown people for allegedly practicing witchcraft.
Muchinga Police Commissioner Joe Njase confirmed the incident in which Charles Sinyinza was left unconscious after sustaining deep cuts in the head.
Mr Njase said the incident happened around 2030 hours and was reported by Mabvuto Mugala 28 of Kabizya village, Chief Muyombe, who is the son in-law of Mr Sinyinza.
He said Mr Sinyinza was hacked in the head with an axe which led him to have sustained multiple deep cuts and bled profusely.
He said Mr Mugala reported the incident at Muyombe police post on September 22 around 0530 hours.
“On September 21 around 0800 hours, the victim went to Kabizya village, which is the neighboring village to his home visit his relatives.
“As he went back home in the evening around 20.00 hours, he was forcefully stopped by two unknown male persons who laid an ambush on a motorbike and armed with an axe,” he said.
Mr Njase said the two men confronted Mr Sinyinza and allegedly beat him and hacked him in the head with an axe.
Mr Sinyinza fortunately shouted for help and the nearby community responded quickly area.
He said Mr Sinyinza was rescued but the two assailants’ rod off on their motorbike on seeing a mob of people coming to help the victim.
Mr Njase said the victim was rushed to Muyombe rural health center in a very critical condition and in an unconscious state.
Medical personnel had indicated that he would be evacuated to Isoka District Hospital for specialist treatment.
“The victim is suspected to be practicing witchcraft. A docket of the case has been opened, but no arrests have been made yet. The officers are doing everything possible to bring the culprits to book,” he said.
Mr Njase warned all those who had a habit of attacking innocent people to stop and that once found they would account for their conduct or actions before law.
He urged people to focus on developing the region as opposed to committing serious crimes for whatever reasons.
