HARARE – The government of Zimbabwe has revealed that former President Robert Mugabe died of cancer.
A statement in the state-owned newspaper on Monday said that the former guerrilla leader had been taken off chemotherapy shortly before passing away on September 6 aged 95.
Before his ousting in 2017, Mugabe ruled Zimbabwe for 37 years.
Health deterioration
Following his removal from power, Mugabe’s health deteriorated rapidly as he made several trips to Singapore for treatment.
“Mugabe had advanced cancer, and had to be taken off chemotherapy treatment because it was no longer effective,” reported The Herald.
Mugabe’s family had previously said his frequent trips to Singapore were for treatment for cataracts.
According to the newspaper, the revelations on Mugabe’s health were made by his successor President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Saturday.
“Doctors had stopped treatment… because of age and also because cancer had spread and it was not helping anymore,” said the president.
Speaking to AFP, Mugabe’s nephew Leo Mugabe said that he had “no comment on that.”
Wikileaks expose
In 2011, Wikileaks, a whistleblower site, published a diplomatic cable saying Mugabe had cancer with five years to live.
Written in 2008 by the US embassy in Harare, the diplomatic cable revealed that he had prostate cancer.
Mugabe is set to be laid to rest in October at national heroes’ monument in Harare.
