POLICE LAUNCH MANHUNT FOR CRIMINAL GANG

POLICE in Lusaka have launched a manhunt for gang of criminals said to be behind the latest spate of robberies in the province, spokesperson Esther Katongo has confirmed.

Ms Katongo said in the latest incident, the criminals among them a maid using a unregistered motor vehicle, red in colour broke into a house of a Pakistan national in Emmasdale and stole huge sums of money and passports on September 23 at around 12:30 hours.

“Police in Lusaka are looking for six criminals among them a maid in connection with aggravated robbery which occurred yesterday, at about 12:30 hours in Emmasdale, off Katima Mulilo Road at a residence of Harris Shah aged 28, a Pakistan national,” Ms Katongo said. She said the criminals broke into the victim’s house with the help of a maid working at the same residence.

“It is alleged that shortly after Mr Shah left home at about 12:30 hours, the maid only identified as Aoc told Mr Shah’s wife that she was going to the convenience room and immediately after she left, five men entered the premises and went straight to the laundry room where the other maid was found washing clothes,” she said.  Ms Katongo said after entering the premises, the criminals squeezed the other maid by the neck and warned her not to scream and later went to the kitchen where they found Ms Shah whom they grabbed by the hand and demanded for money. She said the criminals went away with K2, 000 cash, $ 15,000 cash, Jewelry worth $7,000 and four passports. Ms Katongo said few minutes later, the other maid who had gone to the convenience room rushed into the house, got her hand bag and ran away.

Ms Katongo said no arrests have been made so far but investigations have been instituted. Meanwhile, Ms Katongo said a 82 year old woman identified as Rita Munkata of Chilumba village, Chief Lubunda of Mwense District has died after being hit by a motor bike.

Ms Katongo said the incident occurred on September 23, at around 18:00 hours on Mwense-Kazembe Road, about 20 Kilometers north of Mwense District.

“The accident happened when a rider of a  Yamah motor bike registration number GRZ 70GS, Marvelous Mambwe aged 24 of Musangu Village, Chief Lubunda of Mwense District who was carrying a pillion identified as Zondani Mvula aged 35, lost control of the motorbike due to excessive speed and hit a pedestrian who was crossing the road,” she said. Ms Mukanta’s body was deposited in Mwense District Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.

Ms Katongo said the rider sustained serious injuries and was unconscious while his pillion(passenger) sustained a deep cut on his left arm.
