HEALTH Professions Council of Zambia (HPCZ) has with immediate effect suspended practicing certificate of a medical doctor Asif Patel for operating an illegal health facility under the University Teaching Hospital’s Cancer Disease Hospital.

HPCZ registrar Bwembya Bwalya said the decision was in accordance with provisions of Section 19 of the Health professions Act No. 24 of 2009.

Mr Bwalya said Dr Patel had been attending to patients and providing conventional treatment at his residence situated in Emmasdale area of Lusaka.

He said the move was contrary to Section 36 of the Health Professions Act which prohibited any person from operating a health facility without a licence.

“Dr Patel has been cited for breaching the provision of Medicines and allied Substances Act of 2013 as it was established that Dr Asif Patel contravened Sections 44 (1) of the Acts,

“Which states that ‘A person shall not sell by retail or otherwise supply medicine in a place other than a pharmacy, health facility or an animal health facility except with a written approved of Authority” and Section 58 (2)  (d) failure to maintain records of medicines or allied substances,” he said.

Mr Bwalya said that the health practitioner’s certificate No. HPCZ/101/3/19590 would remain suspended for a period of four months pending further investigation and subsequent determination of the matter.

Mr Bwalya thanked the whistle blower who alerted the two regulatory bodies HPCZ and ZAMRA about the illegal operations of the above mentioned health practitioner.

He urged members of the public to report all suspicious activities of similar nature to help safeguard life by ensuring that the health services were accessed in established the recognised facilities.
