MAN TO COUGH K5, 000 FOR ‘DAMAGING’ EX-LOVER’S VIRGINITY

A MAN in Lusaka has been ordered by the local court to compensate his ex-girlfriend’s mother K5, 000 for damaging her daughter’s virginity.
Kelvin Mbangula, 23, of Lusaka’s Olympia residential area, was ordered by the Boma Local Court to pay Catherine Chongo, 48, of Garden Township, who sued him for ‘sleeping out’ with her daughter, Rabecca, and impregnating her.
Chongo told senior local court magistrate, Petronella Kalyelye, her daughter began spending nights out of the house between January and February this year, and always said she had been with Kelvin whenever queried.
“My daughter is only 16, but she went astray because of Kelvin. I took her to live with her sister because I wanted her to stay away from him but the sister still used to give me reports that my daughter had continued sleeping out,” Chongo said.
“One morning, I went to Kelvin’s place and went straight to his bedroom, and found Rabecca, my daughter, on his bed,” she said.
Chongo said she took her daughter home but that the girl still continued spending nights out with Kelvin until she fell pregnant.
“We called him and he accepted the responsibility. He even paid K50 as acceptance fee. We set a date to discuss the matter with his family but they never showed up,” she said.
When asked by court if he was the one responsible for the pregnancy, Kelvin expressed doubt saying he heard rumours she had sex with another man while on a drinking spree.
“I dated her daughter in January. One time I heard that she went drinking and ended up having sex with someone else. I even told her I could be blamed if anything happened to her so I told her to forget about me,” he said.
Kelvin explained that, “I was later called and accused of impregnating her. I told them I had doubts because she had slept with someone else. They told me I should just accept because I was the one she pointed the finger at.”
Asked about how many times she had sex with Chongo’s daughter, Kelvin said about three times while they were in a relationship.
“We even agreed with her family to put the issue on hold and wait for the baby to be born so that I could see if it resembled me or not,” he said.
In her statement, Rabecca told court Kelvin was her boyfriend and that he always demanded to have sex whenever they met despite knowing she was a virgin.
“I started having sex with him in January. There was no time we met that he did not demand for sex. Sometimes we would even spend the whole night having sex,” she said.
The court ruled that the probability that Kelvin was responsible for the pregnancy was high, ordered him to pay K5, 000 for damages.
