THE Zambia Under-23 national soccer team performance against Congo Brazzaville that earned it a spot at the 2019 AfCON in Egypt deserves a pat on the back, says National Olympics Committee of Zambia (NOCZ) president Alfred Foloko.
Foloko described the win as hard-earned which proved the high caliber of the youthful side.
He said the qualification to the continental tournament had drawn the team a step closer to the Olympic dream.
“I offer my warmest congratulations to the team for qualifying for the 2019 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations. We are proud of what our young people have achieved and what they are doing to improve the standards of Zambian football on an international stage,
“I confidently believe that the football side will be part of team Zambia as we head to Tokyo next year for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in Japan. We now eagerly await our opportunity to continue cheering on this team at the U-23 AfCON.
Foloko said the U-23 team was a top side in Africa and very capable of reaching greater heights in football.
Zambia will be competing at the tournament having also made to the inaugural competition four years in Senegal.
The top three best teams at the Egypt tournament will earn a spot at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The Zambia national soccer team last qualified to the Olympics in 1988 having gone as far the quarter finals in their famous Seoul Olympics which saw the team demolish Guatemala and Italy .
