2 FISHERMEN DROWN IN KARIBA …As croc kills woman in Samfya

TWO fishermen drowned while two others survived on Lake Kariba in Siavonga District, Southern Province, after a strong wave hit their fishing rig on Sunday night.
And a 37-year-old woman only identified as Kalenga of Samfya District in Luapula Province has been killed by a crocodile.
The drowning victims met their fate 02:00 hours at Simunjalala fishing area.
The fishing rig the four kapenta fishermen were in while on a fishing expedition is reported to have capsized as a result of the strong winds that blew across the lake in the early hours of Sunday.
Siavonga District Commissioner Lovemore Kanyama and police have confirmed the drowning in Siavonga.
The two dead fishermen have been identified as Noah Chenge, 40, of Kanyelele Compound and Reggan Mweemba, 30, of Chirundu district while the survivors who managed to swim to the shore have been named as Mbase Hamukuli and Hardwell Makomba of Kanyelele Compound.
The marine unit of the Zambia Police Service has since retrieved one body while efforts to find the remaining one are still going on.
Some Siavonga residents have expressed concern over the number of fishermen who have continued to lose their lives on Lake Kariba.
Aaron Kambadzo, who is Patriotic Front constituency youth chairman, said there was a need to strengthen safety measures.
Mr Kambadzo said Government should compel all fishing rigs and house boats to have radio systems to ensure smooth communication between fishermen and land crews during emergencies.

Kalenga was among a group of friends fetching water on the edge of Kampolombo Lagoon when the reptile attacked and dragged her into deep water.
Police said when she went to fetch water in Kampolombo, which is part of Lake Bangweulu.
Luapula Province Commissioner of Police Elias Chushi said the victim was attacked in full view of her friends while she was fetching water.
“Yes, I can confirm that the woman only identified as Kalenga of Mwaba Village was allegedly attacked in Kampolombo near Lake Bangweulu on Friday. She was actually attacked in full view of her friends,” Mr Chushi said.
