SUSPECTED MURDER COPS GRANTED BAIL

FIVE police officers of Mpika in Muchinga Province accused of causing the death of two suspects while in custody have been granted bail.

Appearing before Chinsali Magistrate Julius Malata ,  were James Moonga, Andrew Chanda, Josam Simachula, Matthews Mulenga and Steven Lukwesa  who were granted K15,000 bail each with two government working sureties in their own recognizance.

The police officers were jointly charged for causing the death of Elija Mwiko and Peter Mwiko both of Mpika district contrary to section 199 of the penal code, Chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia.

It is alleged that the five while acting together caused the death of two suspects who were detained at Mpika police station on a suspected attempted murder case of a human resource officer from Chilonga Mission hospital in Mpika district.

Magistrate Malata adjourned the matter to 10th September 10, for mention as the court waits for instructions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

On August 26 the accused officers appeared before Chinsali Magistrate court and applied for bail which has now since been granted.

 According to postmortem results conducted by the pathologists from Lusaka the two suspects died of blunt impact trauma on the head, torsos and limbs.-ZANIS
