SOUTH PRISON CONGESTION REDUCES

CONGESTION in some of the Correctional Facilities (prisons) in Southern Province has slightly reduced compared to the situation in January, says Central Correctional Facility acting assistant superintendent Gordon Masuku.
Mr Masuku said as of September 2, at 06:00 hours, the province had a total of 1, 861 inmates and remandees compared to 2, 186 in January last year.
This came to light when Mr Musuku presented the gull delivery in the High Court on the status of the correctional facilities in the province on Monday.
During the opening of the criminal session in January this year, Livingstone had 687 inmates followed by Choma with 492.
But on Monday, Mr Musuku told High Court Judge Kenneth Mulife that Livingstone had 599 while Choma had 443.
Mr Musuku said that Monze had 371, Kalomo 217, Katombola 197 and Namwala 139 respectively.
Despite the slight reduction, Mr Mususu told the court that the issue of congestion was still a major concern in the correctional facilities in the province.
He was hopeful that the situation would be addressed one day.
