OLD ILLITERATE CHIRUNDU FOLKS CHALLENGED

MANY old people of Chirundu have been challenged to enroll for adult education to improve their lot.
The challenge was thrown by acting district commissioner and chiefs and traditions officer Kahinga Samunyina has called on all schools to ensure that they enrolled many grown-ups for adult literacy.
Addressing district stakeholders on Friday during a preparedness meeting held in the council chamber ahead of the Literacy Day which falls on September 8 this year, Mr Samunyina challenged adults to enroll for the programme so that they could improve their reading skills and lives.
He said that literacy made one feel acquainted with the society.
Mr Samunyina implored schools to ensure that they adhered to his directive so that they supplemented government efforts to eradicate poverty through education in Zambia.
He thanked University of Zambia (UNZA) for opening an adult learning institution in the district.
During the same meeting, District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) Ms Veronica Mubanga also implored teachers in the district to ensure that adult literacy was a reality.
She said that adult literacy students would be equipped with skills and broader knowledge on how to rear chickens among other entrepreneur and productive ventures.
Ms Mubanga advised parents to take adult literacy very seriously and appreciate the benefits of education and discourage children from absconding classes.
This year Chirundu district will join the rest of Zambia in commemoration of the World Literacy Day” under the theme “Literacy and multi-Lingualism”.
