INCREASED thefts from parked motor vehicles in Lusaka’s Kalundu and Kwabata residential areas have worried citizens who are calling on the local authority and police to curb the vice.
The residents of Kabwata and Kalundu urged the Lusaka City Council (LCC) to help curb the arising problem of thieves who were grabbing people’s purses and breaking into parked cars with impunity.
One of the victims, whose name has been withheld, of Kabwata said theft cases had become a trend and many residents were living in fear.
“I still cannot believe till today, I mean we parked the car at a friend’s wedding. When I got back I realised the company phone, some documents, money and the clothes I had in the car were missing and I was in shock about it because I didn’t get a chance to even see the people who stole,” she said.
“I feel quick action on such thieves is going to be a good lesson for many others who want to imitate wrong behaviour,” the victim said.
Many residents of Kalundu said as students it was becoming unbearable because many of them had to move to and from their boarding houses to study each day. They also frequented the nearby shopping malls.
“It was recent when my friend and I were walking back from school in the evening that we saw a car that seemed to be pulling over right near to us. Before we knew it a man from the car disembarked, grabbed my purse and quickly drove off,” one student said.
“I didn’t even get a chance to check the number plate because I was still wondering what had transpired at that moment, and we had no idea who they were otherwise we wouldn’t have hesitated to tell the police,” Natasha Phiri said.
The residents also said if they parked their cars they were not safe from the thieves.
“What then can we do, because we are left with no option but to park outside and we cannot always get all the things from the car. It is like our second home on its own.
