POLICE in Nakonde have recovered K11,300 from a Nakonde sex worker who allegedly stole K62,000 from a Serenje businessman on Thursday.
Muchinga Province police Commissioner Joel Njase said the suspect, identified as Martha Namukoko, was apprehended by a team of security personnel which included a female officer.
Mr Njase said Namukolo led police to her parents’ home in Garbon Compound in Ntindi Village where she had buried the Money.
“Following the apprehension of one female Martha Namukoko, who allegedly stole cash amounting to K 62,000.00.
“A team of detectives who included a female officer made a follow-up at Ntindi Village (Garbon Compound). They were led by the suspect to her parents’ home to recover money and a cell phone,” Mr Njase said.
He said Namukolo led the officers to her bedroom, where she had hidden the money.
“When they entered the bedroom, she uncovered her beddings [reed mat or impasa] and explained to the officers that she had wrapped the money in a white plastic bag and a chitenge material and buried the money,” Mr Njase said.
He said Namukolo unearthed the ‘parcel’ and handed it over to the officers and gave them the cell phone, a Tecno Spark2, which she had allegedly stolen from the victim.
Mr Njase said the police officers later conducted a systematic search of the house which did not yield any more booty.
The police later counted the money, which amounted to K11,700 and a Tecno.
He said the phone was valued at K1,300.
The total value of the recovered materials was K13,000.
Mr Njase said the cash and the cell phone had been kept as exhibits.
He said Namukolo was in police custody.
She will appear in court soon after police have concluded their investigations into the theft which was widely reported by the Zambian media, with some people rebuking the victim for being immoral and reckless with his money and life.
