ZAF INTER UNIT SPORTS REVIVED

THE Zambia Air Force (ZAF) yesterday flagged off its inter-unit sport competition which was last held in 2009.

The five day event which has attracted about 1,000 participants drawn from all ZAF formations across Zambia was flagged off by Air Force Commander Lieutenant General David Muma at the ZAF Lusaka base.

Muma who was guest of honour at the event said his command attached great importance to sport and fitness as it was a prerequisite to attaining operational efficiency and combat readiness.

He said the regardless of whether one played combat or combat service support role, the collective effectiveness was directly dependent on the level of fitness.

He further said that since assuming office, his command had provided support to various sports clubs which had yielded positive results.

“This is evidenced by our increased investment in Gym construction, the acquisition of gym equipment and the provision of buses for various sports clubs throughout the air force,

“We have provided air transport to help alleviate the effects of road fatigue which often times has a bearing on team performance the consequent result.

The Air force commander said it was his desire that many more servicemen would be encouraged to actively participate in various unit sports throughout the air force.

He said it was from the various units within the force that they identified sportsmen and women with the calibre to participate at national level which directly contributed to the Force’s commitment of supporting the country’s sporting efforts.

Muma said he was committed to ensuring that the inter-unit sports competition was held regularly.

The competition which ends on Friday has attracted nine air force stations and units across Zambia to compete in various sporting disciplines which included soccer, basketball, tug of war and athletics.
