Teenage girl dies from excessive alcohol consumption

A-13 -Year old girl of Nakonde has died from over consumption of alcohol.

Muchinga province police Commissioner Joel Njase confirmed the incident and named the victim as Memory Namutenda of Mwenzo Cooks compound who died on Friday around 05:30 hours.

Mr Njase said Namutenda was pronounced dead on arrival at nearby Mwenzo Rural clinic in Chieftainess Waitwika’s area of Nakonde district.

“Mr Flyton Simbeye of Mwenzo Girls secondary school Cooks compound in Chieftainess Waitwika’s area reported having brought in the dead body of his granddaughter Namutenda to the clinic,” Mr Njase said.

Mr Njase said preliminary investigation indicated that Namutenda was too drunk and was pronounced dead on arrival at the clinic.

He said police were making a follow-up to ascertain their line of action.

Mr Njase said it was regrettable that parents were not mentoring the young ones properly.

Mr Njase said two weeks ago police summoned and engaged all those involved in selling intoxicating liquor in Chinsali district.

He said under-age patronage, noise pollution, late closing and licensing issues to alcohol selling outlets among others were discussed.

Mr Njase advised and warned all those involved in liquor business to follow the law.

“Further, we wish to advise all village headmen to rise up and provide leadership in matters of morality, innovation and creativity among the youths for social and economic advancement,” he said.

Mr Njase said it was common knowledge that poverty was not lacking but the issue was being unproductive.

He said Muchinga Province wa blessed with abundant natural resources and that focus on transformation of mindsets, issues of alcohol abuse among the youth would be thing of the past.
