SMALL-SCALE farmers should take advantage of the good maize price and grow more of the crop in the 2019/2020 farming season, says Kasama Mayor Fredrick Chisanga.
Mr Chisanga said the K110 purchasing price of a 50-kilogram bag of maize offered by the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) should also motivate people to venture into farming.
“We are happy that government through FRA has increased the maize price and we appeal to small-scale farmers in the 2019/2020 farming season in a bid to enhance household food security,” Mr Chisanga said.
He has also urged his fellow civic leaders in Northern Province to encourage small-scale farmers in their respective wards to increase agriculture production.
Mr Chisanga said civic leaders needed to encourage farmers to take advantage of this year’s maize price and produce enough maize.
Mr Chisanga said maize production should be increased because the agriculture sector supported the livelihood of over 70 percent of people particularly in rural areas.
He, however, cautioned farmers not to sell all their maize, but leave some for home consumption.
