THE United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) is funding feasibility studies for utility scale and wind projects aimed at strengthening electricity provision between Zambia and Mozambique.

USTDA acting deputy director Todd Abrajano said the project would link Pensulo and Mpika.

Mr Abrajano said the project would be the first commercial geothermal power plant and technical support for the design of the Zambia-Mozambique interconnector.

He was speaking recently in Lusaka at a signing ceremony for a US$1.3 million grant to finance feasibility studies for a hybrid, wind, solar and storage project on the Copperbelt between USTDA and Upepo Energy Zambia.

“The Zambia-Mozambique Transmission Interconnector Technical Advisory Support is providing much needed technical assistance to build regional infrastructure to strengthen electricity provision.

“This grant will add to USTDA’s portfolio in Zambia, which includes feasibility studies such as two utility scale wind generation projects. These are Pensulo Wind Project with Access Power and Mpika Wind Project with Globeleg,” Mr Abrajano said.

USTDA’s programme investments, Mr Abrajano said, provided critical early-stage planning to catalyse new power generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure.

Mr Abrajano said through Power Africa Intuitive, USTDA’s early project interventions would help leverage an anticipated US$11.5 billion in financing from public and private sources, while supporting some US$5.2 billion in export opportunities for Unites Stes companies.
