THE Livingstone City Council (LCC) has authoralised the creation of an interim committee for the Intercity Bus Terminus, which is scheduled for completion in February next year.

Public relations manager Melvin Mukela said the committee, which is led by Chewe Chewe of Kondwani Bus Services, was ushered into office last week on Wednesday in elections conducted at the civic centre.

Mr Mukela said in an interview for now, the committee would conduct its operations at the current bus station awaiting further instruction on the way forward once the new station was completed.

He said the council and NAPSA had agreed on how the modern bus station would be managed and would advise the interim committee.

“We have resolved as a local authority to have an interim committee for the bus station. For now, we have advised the committee to operate from the old bus station because the intercity is still under construction by Zambia National Service (ZNS),” Mr Mukela said.

“Initially, the committee thought it was going to start operating from the new station, but since we do not know how the financier, NAPSA, would want the station to be operated, we advised them to wait for that decision,” he said.

Mr Mukela said the interim committee was supposed to be for two years and the council had the mandate to dissolve it if need arose.

He was disappointed after supporters of some members in the committee engaged in a physical fight which resulted in assault cases.

According to him, there were two camps contesting the positions which led to the misunderstanding.

It was later revealed that the two camps were supported by the opposition United Party for National Development while the other by the ruling Patriotic Front.
