A WITNESS yesterday told the Lusaka Magistrates Court that a 28-year-old Indian who is accused of calling a Zambian man, a black dog has fled to India.

In this matter, Shahnawazy, a sales manager at SD Investment is charged with one count expressing or showing hatred, ridicule or contempt for persons because of race, a charge he denies.

It is alleged that Shahnawazy on April 24, uttered words verbally expressing or showing hatred, ridicule or contempt to Ian Chilenga wholly and mainly because of his tribe, place or original  by saying that ‘you are a black dog’

When the matter came up for return of bench, the State informed court that the warrant was not yet executed and the sureties were not before court.

However, Crispin Liyanda, 46, an arresting officer in this matter explained to chief resident magistrate Lameck Mwale that according to information obtained, the accused and one of his sureties have fled to India in unclear circumstances.

He explained that the accused left Zambia and after following up on the sureties, he discovered that one of them Muhammad Borgus also fled to India.

He said when he contacted another surety by the names of Shakil Salim, his phone went unanswered and no one identified him at the address given before the court.

At this point, Chief resident magistrate, Mwale ordered that Shahnawazy’s sureties be brought to court on warrant.

Shahnawazy is on a K15, 000 cash bail.

The matter has been adjourned to September 10.
