GBV cases on the rise – Police

GENDER based violence (GBV) cases have continued to rise in Zambia, says police spokesperson Esther Katongo.

Ms Katongo said in the second quarter of this year more than 6,000 such cases were reported to the police.

In a statement Ms Katongo said the matter was now of great concern to society at large.

She said according to statics out of the 6,139 GBV cases reported a 583 were of child defilement with 573 female victims and 10 male victims

Out of that 145 cases were for rape cases followed by over a 1,000 cases of assault recorded countrywide.

Lusaka Province recorded the most GBV cases which affected more female than males.

She in comparison between second quarters of 2018, 6,074 cases recorded countrywide against 6,139cases recorded in 2019 thus showing an increase of 65 translating to 1.1 percent increase.

Among the other cases reported were rape and murder cases.

“It is evident that GBV cases have continued to rise and a lot more cases are even being withdrawn by the complainants,

“ It also shows that the community and many other stakeholders need to take it upon themselves to reinforce the fight against the menace that the society is facing,” she said

Ms Katongo said she was aware that more cases were not being reported, and called on the community to help GBV victims and give them urgent support in order to eradicate the scourge.
