THE Zambian government has been commended by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) for taking strides in scaling up and enhancing the delivery of social protection systems in the country.

ILO national project coordinator for Social Protection, Patience Matandiko said government has been seen coming up with different social protection programmes aimed at helping the vulnerable in society.

Ms Matandiko said that was a step in the right direction because social protection programmes contributed to the realization of national economic development goals of any country.

ZANIS reports that Ms. Matandiko said this in Chingola during a training workshop on building and managing social protection programmes in Africa organized by ILO.

Ms Matandiko said the workshop was meant to build capacity for implementers of the programme to effectively deliver government programmes.

She further noted that there was need to develop capacity for officers at both national and district levels for government to effectively deliver its social protection system.

And Chingola District Commissioner, Mary Chibesa thanked ILO for choosing the district to be part of the programme.

“Government desires is to ensure that the social protection programmes ultimately translate into poverty reduction and existence of more inclusive society, she said

And Chingola Municipal Council director for housing and social services, Raphael Kamanga said the local authority would work with ILO to ensure that social protection programmes in the district were implemented.
