STREET vendors and farmers trading outside Monze’s Hamusonde market, near Mum’s Bakery, have praised the local authority for quickly looking into their plight and finding them an alternative vending place.
The civic leaders of Monze Urban ward secured a piece of land for street vendors and have since relocated them.
Speaking on behalf of fellow vendors, Jennifer Shankwaya said most street vendors depended on their small businesses for survival and praised the council for giving them a trading place as opposed to chasing them.
She however called on council to quickly put up necessary amenities to make their lives bearable.
“We are grateful to the council for this land. We are now appealing to our local authority to quickly build toilets as well giving us security so that we can trade in a safe place,” she said.
And Choice Mayambu who represented farmers, commended the local leadership for the manner in which it had engaged the growers.
“We are happy in the way they have managed the whole issue and among ourselves we have chosen a leadership for which I am the chairperson. We hope this will be our permanent place,” he said
And Monze Urban Ward Councilor Pandwe Buumba who was in the company of the council chairperson Bisha Munsaka said the relocation of the marketeers was meant to provide them with a permanent trading place.
“This is the first step in the development of this area. These are the farmers who feed us so we should not be shifting them from one place to another frequently,
“They started from Hamusonde market – we again moved them I think two or three times before we took them to Mum’s Bakery. But now, this is a long-term plan that we are looking at and they are going to be permanently here and we can even name this area as Hamusonde Green Market,” he said.
