GOVERNMENT should ban bonanza machines and other betting gadgets because they are corrupting morals and causing addiction among youths, a youth activist has said.

Twaambo Mutinta said in an interview yesterday gambling was destroying many youths in the country and there was, therefore, a need for the government to take serious action.

Recently, Kenya banned a number of betting companies citing that they were corrupting morals, causing addiction, externalizing money illegally and failing to pay taxes.

Mr. Mutinta said the Zambian government should emulate its Kenyan counterpart to protect citizens.

He said young people were becoming unproductive because they were spending their precious time on gambling.

“Slowly, we are losing our young people,” Mr. Mutinta said, “because young people are only concentrating on issues which are destroying them.”

Mr. Mutinta said if the situation was left unchecked, Zambia would have morally corrupt youths.

He said if youths became unproductive because they were concentrating on making fast money they would not be able to contribute to the growth of the country.

“This situation is very bad especially areas like Itezhi Tezhi and Mumbwa districts. What happens is that young people abandon school just for gambling.

“What is even shocking is that even boys and girls as young as 10 years have engaged in such activities.

“What kind of generation are we going to have if young people the country is looking to as future leaders are stopping school to engage in unproductive activities?” he said.
