LCC shuts 40 bars

ABOUT 40 bars within Lusaka were last Friday night closed by a combined team of Lusaka City Council (LCC) and State police, public health inspectors for operating outside stipulated hours.
LCC public relations officer Lisa Ng’oma said the operation was aimed at curbing the practice of keeping bars open late and would continue throughout the long weekend to monitor the bars.
In a statement Ms Ng’oma said the operation in Matero and Kabwata constituencies started at 22:00 hours and ended at 03:00 hours on Saturday morning.
She said the affected bar operators had their licences confiscated and would be returned after paying the fines while those who were not first offenders would be prosecuted in the fast track court this week.
“The operation was conducted on Friday night after LCC issued a statement warning bar and night club operators in the city to avoid noise pollution, admitting underage patrons and late closures during the long weekend,” Ms Ng’oma said.
Ms Ng’oma said the law stipulated that bars should open at 10:00 hours and close at 22:00 hours, while night clubs should open at 10:00 hours and close at 24:00 hours and that they should make sure that they conducted their businesses within the confines of the law.
She said and that the law also stipulated that no persons below the age of 18 years old should be allowed into alcohol-drinking places.
