GOVERNMENT has through the 7th National Development Plan committed itself to reducing poverty especially among vulnerable in Zambia, says President Edgar Lungu.
President Lungu said that the reduction of poverty and vulnerability were very difficult undertakings that required concerted efforts from various stakeholders.
In a speech read for him by Justice Minister Given Lubinda at the Rotary Club of Maluba induction gala dinner to usher in Rotarian Alex Chileshe as the new president on Friday, President Lungu said he was pleased to note that Rotary international was one of the partners that came on board to support government in such undertakings.
“Rotary’s service projects in Zambia are very visible throughout the country. These are in the areas of peace and conflict resolution, disease prevention and control, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education as well as economic and community development,” he said.
The President said that he was also aware that the Rotary Club of Maluba in particular had a number of service projects which had undoubtedly added value to the lives of the beneficiaries especially the less privileged.
He said the club had both materially and financially supported widows and orphans by way of complimenting government efforts in uplifting their lives.
“My government in grateful and will not forget that the rotary club of Maluba donated a total of K20, 000 cash to the fight against cholera in 2017. And two months ago, the club contributed financial support to the victims of the cyclone Idai in Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe which is a commendable move,” said President Lungu
Mr. Lungu further urged the new president and his board to continue with the good works that the club was known for and that it was important for the members to stir the club to greater heights.
And Mr Chileshe assured that he would be dedicated to the cause of Rotary in the the same way he had demonstrated his commitment over the past few years since he was first inducted into the club 8 years ago.
And outgoing president Charles Sichangwe wished the new board well in the year ahead and thanked the rest of the club members for giving him an opportunity to serve as their president.
