Lusaka council tames angry bees

THE Lusaka City Council pesticide department has smoked out a swarm of bees that have been terrorising residents of Kamulanga Ward in Kabwata Constituency.
Kamulanga Ward Councillor Jonas Phiri said in an interview that the bees had been in a Zesco pole for the last two years but for the last four months, the insects had been attacking people especially school children.
Mr Phiri said three people were on Thursday and Saturday seriously attacked and had to be taken to hospital for treatment.
He commended the city council for quickly responding to the distress call as residents were living in fear.
And Lusaka City Council public relations manager George Sichimba said the local authority received a report about the bees but that there was confusion because the bees were in a Zesco Pole.
Residents had therefore reported the matter to the power company.
Mr Sichimba appealed to the residents to report such matters to the council and avoid fighting with the bees as the local authority had a pesticide department which dealt with such matters.
“We received a report that bees have been terrorising residents of Kamulanga area. So the council moved in, although there was confusion since the bees were in a Zesco property. So people thought they should report the matter to the power utility.
“We have smoked out the bees and I urge the residents to avoid fighting with the bees but instead report to us because we have a department which deals with such matters,” Mr Sichimba said. For the last four months residents of Kamulanga area near the clinic have been living in fear of being attacked by the bees.
