FOR A long time now the people of Kabangwe area in Lusaka have been walking more than 10 kilometres to access health services at Chipata or Matero level one hospitals.

This is because the area has no hospital to service the people.

To supplement Government’s efforts to bring health services closer to the people, a family of Kabangwe in chief Mungule’s area has donated a 60 by 30 metre piece of land for the construction of a mini hospital in the area.

Government will build the hospital. Stanley Mhango says the motivation to donate the land arose from the community work that his grandfather, Bishop George Mhango, provided to the people.

He said his grandfather had supported many projects in the area such as the construction of Shifwakula Primary School and the construction of a bridge which connects Chunga and Kabangwe in Mungule area.

Mr Mhango said the donation was a way of appreciating Chief Mungule for taking good care of the people living in his chiefdom regardless of their ethnicity.

He said the people of Mungule were grateful to the government for giving them the first ever mini hospital.

In the next six months walking 10 kilometres to access healthcare services will be a thing of the past for the people of Kabangwe and Mungule when the 40-bed mini hospital becomes operational

And speaking when he announced the construction of Nora Malemebeka mini hospital, Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya said the job of his ministry and the mandate of the Patriotic Front government was to bring development to the people.

Dr Chilufya said the mini hospital would have both in and out patient departments, surgical services, maternity annex, theatre, an ambulance and a dedicated solar power system. He said the expansion and upgrade of health services would reduce distances people travelled in search of healthcare services.

It was part of the 108 mini hospitals project funded by NMS Infrastructure United Kingdom.

The cost of the project across the country is US$300 million.
