Lafarge launches health, safety days

LAFARGE Zambia plc has launched health and safety days for its employees for both Ndola and Chilanga plants to celebrate best practices in living a safe and healthy life.

And chief executive officer (CEO) Jimmy Khan has called on employees to take health and safety seriously because it bordered on the very core of a human life.

Mr Khan was speaking on Monday at the Ndola plant when he launched the health and safety days themed “7 Minimum Safe Behaviors”.

In a statement released by the company communications and corporate affairs manager Glenda Kamalata, Mr Khan explained that the 7 minimum safe behaviors would set a clear line globally between acceptable and unacceptable behaviour.

He named the 7 MSBs as distracted walking, driving or machinery operation, lock out/tag out, safe work permits, seatbelts, personal protective equipment, drugs and alcohol and reporting of incidents.

The CEO reiterated that improving health and safety in the work place WAs not only paramount to the well-being of the employees and the employers, but more so to the families.

“It’s about ensuring we take a proactive role in Health and safety for ourselves and everyone around us,” he said.

Mr Khan however warned that when a worker violated an MSB, it should be systematically investigated and progressive discipline applied. 

Meanwhile, Mr Khan gave a synopsis of what characterized the business in the first quarter.

He said there was so much happening for the business some of which scored a number of successes, but still called for the team to be more aggressive.

“We have successfully completed the shutdowns in both Plants without fatalities – Well done to all of us! We organized a great Marathon event which was slowly losing essence in terms of our reputation. We turned it round to revamp our Brand equity. Further to this we regained our market share from 24% to 30%,” Mr Khan said.

Mr. Khan further said that the market was getting tougher and tougher, with more competition getting stiffer in the the economy that was not performing well.

He said in the last two months, the company had seen a lot of pressure on cement prices significantly declining to over 10 %, a situation that called for concerted efforts from the team.

He challenged workers to be more aggressive by engaging clients as well as improving various offers to the retail clients in order to give them reason to remain loyal over and above pricing.
