Nchelenge man, 23, murders woman, 45

POLICE in Nchelenge District, Luapula Province, have arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with the murder of a 45-year-old woman.


Police have identified the suspect as Jackson Mulenga of Kashikishi Village, Chief Chimbwali’s area and the victim as Jacqueline Chungu of Piyala Village in Chief Kanyembo’s area.


Police spokesperson Esther Katongo said the murder was reported on May 11, 2019 at 08:10 hours by the husband of the dead woman.
Ms Katongo said Ms Chipulu was returning from her field with her daughter, Judith Kasawa, 19, when they met Mulenga near Mantapala Refugee Camp.


When Mulenga threatened them, Ms Chipulu’s daughter ran away.
Mulenga attacked Ms Chipulu, repeatedly hitting her on the head with a stick until she became unconscious.
Ms Chipulu suffered severe head injuries.


She was picked by members of the public and taken to St Paul’s Mission Hospital where she died in the early hours of Saturday about 02:00 hours.


Her body is in the mortuary awaiting post-mortem while the Mulenga is detained at Nchelenge police station.


Ms Katongo said he is expected to be charged with murder.
The motive behind the attack has not yet been established.
