ZAMBIAN female boxers participation at an invitational tournament in India is in doubt because of lack of sponsorship, says Zambia Boxing Federation general secretary Bright Chomba.

Chomba said his federation has since appealed to first lady Esther Lungu for help.

He said national team was set to participate in the India open championship Ghuwahati to be held from May 19-28 but money was currently the major drawback.

Chomba told the Sun sport that the tournament was important because it kept his federation in good standing with the International Boxing Federation (IBF) in terms of participation in global tournaments.

“Currently Zambia is the region 5 champions after they minted 7 medals in December 2018,and further minted 8 medals at the Zone 4 championship in Botswana last month with some females being among the winners,’’ he said .

He said in that light that the Federation was appealing to the first lady to come on board and help sponsor the female boxers to go and participate in the tournament in India.

The federation has also appealed to President Edgar Lungu to bail out the team of its $15,000 budget.
